Advocate For Yourself
The only opportunities that pan out are ones that you invest in. And part of that is taking that first step and betting on yourself. This year has been about constantly learning about myself and pivoting. I’m a serial over thinker and something that I want to get away from. I’ve recognized that it has prevented me from jobs, meeting people, and learning new things.
I’m done with all that and I wanted to share a how responding to one IG story kickstarted a client relationship with business owners Nino and Cheryl Eng of Kult and Nite Creamery . It’s been great getting to know them, as well as their Head Chef Steve Lucero, and contribute to bringing their vision to life.
Forced to Pivot
2021 has brought about significant changes that have a lotted me the time and space to figure out what I want for my life both professionally and personally. Prior to January of this year I had be working as a UX/UI designer at a mid-level tech company that didn’t have much upward mobility. I was an individual contributor working for a giant company and I just didn’t share the same passion for networking, security, and making shareholders a boatload of cash.
Moving on from my full-time gig was going to be risky, but I knew that if I didn’t try to become my own boss now that I never would. I’m a serial over thinker, but with the support of my wife I took a leap of faith and bet on myself to make shit happen.
My “Fuck It” Moment
An opportunity presented itself via Instagram. A specialty ice cream shop, Nite Creamery posted was asking for a recommendations for photographers. I had type out a response, but immediately deleted it before submitting my answer. I had serious self doubt referring myself and didn’t want to look desperate.
But for whatever reason I had a “fuck it” moment. I answered it. I sent sample work and said something like, “Hi. I’m Stephen Heraldo and I’m a photographer. Here is some of my food photography. Let’s chat.”
I went back and forth with the one of the owners, Nino Eng. Being both creative and having a knack for design and details, we hit it off. He explained to me that they were close to opening their new restaurant venture in San Luis Obispo called Kult. They wanted someone to photograph their menu and create all the initial assets that would be used for their marketing materials. We wrote up the contracts and went to work.
They wanted dark and moody. So that’s what I gave them.
Bet On Yourself
The only opportunities that pan out are ones that you invest in. And part of that is taking that first step and betting on yourself. Up until recently I’ve hardly taken risks. I’m a serial overthinker and talk myself out opportunities. I’m done doing that.
I hope this reaches someone and empowers them to have a “fuck it” moment and go after what they want.
